A smaller group than usual discussed this month’s book (due to incapacity both human and canine!), which was based around a teenaged girl and her cousins, and their experiences during a war and occupation of UK; set sometime in the near future.
The book was enjoyed by everyone, though some more than others, and it was generally felt that it was well written and descriptive. It was agreed that certain passages, describing the shock and circumstance of war and its consequences, were thought provoking and atmospheric, although some members would have preferred more detail on what actually happened to Edmund after the massacre at the farm.
Several members thought the book was an unlikely example of teenage literature, but felt that it could only be seen as a positive thing to encourage young people to read books such as this, with its serious subject matter and adult writing style.
All in all, another successful choice, enjoyed by all.”
